Stacy felt like she was sleepwalking.

She didn’t know what time it was, only that it was still dark outside. She knew that they had come up to Amy’s study and settled into comfortable leather chairs. She knew Ethan had remained downstairs to fix food and find them something to drink. She heard Amy’s comforting voice say, “Tell me what happened.”

Stacy began with the details that were easier: Miles creating the tunnel and their infiltration into the castle, finding Kiera, and learning from the fae guard about the fae king’s presence on their world. Amy’s expression grew troubled, and Stacy stumbled as she told her friend what had happened next. The bodies, the disappearing king, and the realization that she’d been framed.

“I knew it was a trap, but I still went.” Stacy’s voice wobbled. “It was a set-up from the beginning, and he used Kiera, his fucking daughter, to lure me in.”

Amy touched Stacy’s arm. “You would have been framed by those letters whether you went or not. You brought our friend back, and that is what matters. You aren’t wrong for walking into that trap. You would be a lesser woman if you had chosen not to rescue Kiera.”

Stacy knew Amy was right, but she couldn’t force her heart to believe it. Tears pricked her eyes. All she could think of were those lost lives, what had happened to Kiera, and not being aware of the fae king’s presence. I should have been paying attention. I should have prepared. How did we not notice something was amiss?

Her voice broke. “I’ve never felt this lost and confused. I’ve always been able to handle the threats I face. I thought Lenny Dolos and Victor Corbinelli were bad, but this…” She trailed off, unable to compose words. Exhaustion gripped her body and dug its fingers into her mind.

“You’re allowed to feel lost and confused.”

Am I? Stacy wondered. If she could not defeat the trespassing king, who would? She needed to learn more about his intentions. That crooked smile on his perfect face would haunt her dreams.

Stacy continue, “I should have known this was coming. Maybe it’s not a real threat and I was stupid not to see it. I should have called my father the moment we learned Kiera had been taken, but I let my pride hold me back. I didn’t want to need his help.”

Amy rose, then knelt before her and took her hands. “You cannot blame yourself for this, and Reginald contacted your father.”

Stacy raised her head and met Amy’s gaze. “Regi was here?”

Amy told Stacy about the butler’s visit and the invitation, then told her about Damien’s appearance. Stacy’s brow furrowed. “Damien wasn’t simply ‘passing by.’ He came with a purpose. I want to know what the hell it was.”

“It was strange,” Amy agreed. “We need answers.”

She had forgotten about Damien Hartwell when she’d learned Kiera had been taken.

“The fae king must see you as a threat,” Amy added. “Your father too. He wants you out of the way before he does what he wants on this world.
